Simple and Easy Ways on How to Unclog a Sink
The sight of a blocked sink with standing water can be disturbing to say the least. The good thing is that there are simple and easy ways that you can use to unclog a sink with readily available things. The general rule is to try and fix the sink the earliest time possible when you start seeing some problems before they build up.
Ways of Unclogging a Sink
1. Use of Boiling Water
This is an easy and inexpensive way that you can take advantage of. It is actually the best place to start. Use your kettle to heat water until it boils. As the water boils, remove all the water that has stagnated and the sink. Next, pour your hot water directly into the drain of the sink. While at it, you should be very careful since the hot water or even the steam can be very dangerous. If there is no change, you can repeat this process a number of times.
2. Use of a Plunger
The use of a plunger is yet another simple way you can use to unclog your sink. What you need to do first is to remove the standing water. You can use a basin or a cup to do this. Talking about a plunger, it is always hygienic to have separate plungers for the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Storage points for these plungers should also be separate.
The next step involves placing the plunger over the drain of the sink. Make sure that the hole of the sink drain is covered fully. Apply some little pressure up and down and you will see the clog and stagnant water coming out. Once you are done, run some clean water to rinse your sink. Just in case it didn’t work, don’t frown, we are not done yet. There are still several ways below you can use to unlock a sink.
3. Use of Vinegar and Baking Soda
Vinegar and baking soda have been used to unclog sinks with amazing results. Like the above methods, begin by removing water from the sink. Pour into the sink drain a cup of baking soda followed by a similar amount of vinegar. The next thing is that you should put a stopper preferably made of rubber to cover the sink hole for about 15 minutes or thereabout.
As you wait for the 15 minutes to elapse, boil some water in the kettle since you will need it in the next step. Pour the boiled water directly into the hole of the sink to flush the clog. You can do this regularly to ensure the clog doesn’t build up.
4. Use of Salt and Boiling Water
The procedure here is more or less similar to the one above. Ensure you remove the standing water from your sink. Take about a half cup of ordinary salt and pour it into the sink. Next, pour the boiling water down the sink drain and give it a few minutes. Run hot water to clear the resulting mixture.
5. Cleaning the P-Trap
To begin with, a P-trap is the curved part of your drainage pipe underneath the sink. We however need to start by emphasizing that this should be treated as a method of last resort when all others have failed. The first step is to open your cabinet and place a bucket under the drain to help you in trapping all the dirt or materials that may come out of the drain.
Next, unfasten the P-trap carefully and get rid of all the debris. A pair of gloves may be used at this stage. You should proceed and dispose of all the removed dirt since it may not be smelling anything close to attractive! Finally, reattach the P-trap then run some water.
How to Avoid Clogging a Sink
- The old cliché goes prevention is better than cure. You can prevent your sink from being clogged in the first place. This will majorly involve adopting a proper garbage disposal system.
- Grease should never find its way into your sink at all costs. This is a major contributor to clogging your sink.
- Peels of foods like potato and fruits are also common culprits. When they are washed down the sink, they can have devastating effects.
- Keep inspecting the drainage system of your sink to check if it’s functioning normally. You can do this regularly by running water into the sink and observing how fast it is draining. Hot water is preferable.
By following the above simple and easy methods, you can unblock a sink without having to call your plumber. Of course, this will save you a few coins and at the same time help you develop an important skill. However, you can avoid the unclogging stage by following the prevention tips we have suggested above.
